| Very recently I came up with the idea to collect crutches for the people in Haiti. This idea sparked while I was watching a news channel report on the devastating earthquake in Haiti. The reporter said that many Haitians were having their limbs amputated with everyday hand saws and without any kind of pain medicine.
What struck me the most was when he said the children were not able to get up, not even to see if their parents were alive. I couldn’t wrap my mind around a child not having a parent to lift them up, or of a child having to have their limbs amputated in such a horrific way. It brought tears to my eyes and pain to my heart.
The first thing that I said was, “Mom, they need crutches!" Then I determined to help them. Everybody has a pair of crutches in their attic, and these crutches are needed by thousands of newly disabled children and adults in Haiti. Please help me collect, refurbish and send your unused crutches to Haiti.
The Kickoff Event at Broadway Square Mall brought in 50 pairs of crutches, but we need 950 more pairs to reach my goal of collecting 1,000 pairs of crutches by March 28, 2010. Bring your old crutches to any of our Crutch Collection Centers listed to the right. If you can help with the costs to refurbish or ship the crutches, visit our How You Can Help page.
We Need More Collection Centers! Every church in Tyler can be a Collection Center for crutches from your members. Let us know by completing our Contact Form and selecting Collection Point from the drop-down box.
